Salary Increase for Teachers 2018

Good news has come for all teachers here in the Philippines. President Rodrigo Duterte is seeking to increase the salary of teachers.

Last January 8, 2017, the news of the possible salary increase was officially announced by Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque. The spokesperson said that President Rodrigo Duterte has already given instructions to the Department of Budget and Management. The department was told to start planning the salary increase for teachers with the next tax reform package.

Spokesperson Harry Roque said: “The President also stated that with the second tax reform package, he has instructed DBM and all other agencies to find means to increase the salary of teachers after the initial doubling of salaries for the AFP and the police. So the teachers will be next.”

Although, there was no specific numbers mentioned by the president on how much exactly the increase will be, but Spokesperson Harry Roque said that most likely the increase would be similar to the increase the president had initially given the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) which took effect this January 2018. Meaning, if this was so, teachers can then expect that their salaries will be doubled if this pushes through.

Many people in social media have already expressed their excitement and approval for such action of the president. A lot are expressing that teachers have been underpaid or under appreciated by the government, that this salary increase would help teachers get encouraged to continue doing the job they do.

The proposed salary increase has been in discussion in our government since last year. In the State of the Nation Address (SONA) of the president last year, he mentioned that a salary increase for teachers is one of the things he really wants to fight and push for. He vowed that he will make it happen.
